Tri-State Food Pantry is a 501c3 public charity and a faith-based organization that provides food to qualifying low-income families in Dade County, GA.  It is an all-volunteer, ecumenical ministry supported by about 20 local churches, the United Way, Food City Share Your Christmas campaign, grants, and individual gifts.

Tri-State Food Pantry is open for food distribution on the first and third Fridays of each month from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at 2026 Highway 136, behind Sand Mountain United Methodist Church.  A satellite distribution occurs on the first Friday of the month at the West Brow Fire Hall for Lookout Mountain residents.  Food boxes weigh an average of 50 pounds and most have a retail value of $100 or more.  They contain canned and dry goods and frozen meats, fruit, and dairy when available.  In 2019, the Food Pantry distributed 4,030 food boxes, serving 658 different households, impacting 1,520 individuals.

For 11 months of 2020, the Pantry has distributed 4,240 boxes to 755 different households with 1,795 people – that’s an astounding 222,500 pounds of food distributed!   Since mid-March, food distributions have been conducted outside in drive-through style for the safety of clients and volunteers.
At the beginning of the pandemic they lost a few volunteers for whom health issues made any interactions risky, but they have managed to operate with fewer volunteers on distribution days.  Given the size of their building, the Pantry has deliberately tried to limit volunteers on box-packing day, resulting in some of volunteers working harder and giving extra hours during the past six months.

According to Executive Director Rose Powell, “We have some of the hardest working and most dedicated volunteers imaginable.  They show up month after month to make food available to families of Dade County.   We can use a few more able-bodied volunteers who can lift boxes weighing 40 pounds or more.  Other volunteers can pack boxes or put lighter items into cars.”  Volunteers are welcome on distribution days and on packing days.  Boxes are packed on the Wednesday before the first Friday of each month at 1 pm.  Work begins as early as 11 am on most distribution days.

Tri-State Food Pantry would like to thank the community for the increased financial support given during the pandemic.  They have received gifts from businesses, several foundations and individuals in the area. The Chattanooga Area Food Bank and the Atlanta Community Food Bank are the source of virtually all of the food distributed.  Because food costs from these Food Banks are so much less than retail prices, your financial gift goes farther to feed people than buying items to donate.
